The language in the following paragraph should be used for all research involving PSY201,
General Psychology, students:
COSTS AND PAYMENTS
As a General Psychology (PSY201) student, I will receive one research point for each half hour of
participation, as indicated in the course syllabus. The study will normally take approximately XX hour,
for a total of XX research points. Aside from the earning of research points, I understand that class
standing or grades will not be affected by my decision to participate in or withdraw from this study.
Participation in this study is strictly voluntary. There will be no cost to me for participating in this research.”
In addition, there should be language permitting withdrawal from the study, which includes but
is not exclusive to PSY201 subjects:

RESEARCH SUBJECT RIGHTS: I have read or have had read to me all of the above.
_____________________ has explained the study to me and answered all of my questions. I have been told of the risks or discomforts and possible benefits of the study.
I understand that I do not have to take part in this study, and my refusal to participate will involve no
penalty or loss of rights to which I am entitled. I may withdraw from this study at any time without
penalty or loss of benefits to which I am entitled.
I understand that any information obtained as a result of my participation in this research study will be
kept as confidential as legally possible. The results of this study may be published, but my records will
not be revealed unless required by law.”
